Architects and interior designers have to learn the basic standards of space design when they are learning their art. Since the living room is the most major part of a home, here are 5 essential standards for its design that you need to know about:
1. Between the console and media wall

Everybody is well aware of the harmful impact of television on the eyes if you sit too close to it. So, experts in the field have declared that the minimum distance between the couch and the media wall has to be at least 5 feet. This is, of course, for homes that have a very small real estate. The distance can be greater than 5 feet if your space is large enough.
2. Circulation around the coffee table

The actual placement of the coffee table in the living room makes it very close to the seat-end of the couch. The minimum distance here has to be 2 feet – more if you prefer more leg room. Now, the circulation area around the rest of the three sides of the coffee table requires much more leeway – at least 3 feet 4 inches – if you want to move around without bumping into its corners.
3. Between the back end and the dining area

If you’ve got an open floor layout (as most homes in Singapore do) then you have to make sure that the distance between the black of your couch and the start of your dining table features adequate amount of circulation space. It has to be a minimum of 4 feet for the spaces to retain an individualistic look. It can be more depending on the size of your open spaces.
4. Value for side spaces

If your couch is located in the very center of your living room and there are open circulation spaces on both of its sides, then you have to be very rational about them. They have to be at least 3 feet on either end (a total of 6 feet for both ends) for the space to be as functional as possible. It’s preferable if the spaces are more than 3 feet if your space is large enough.
5. For an accent chair

If you’ve got a living room with accent chairs, then you have to make sure that there is enough area for them to feel comfortably spacious and not cramped. The space between the edge of the coffee table and the starting point of the accent chair has to be 4 feet six inches. Of course there has to be at least 3 feet of circulation space in the background as well.
