‘What should I ask my interior designers and how do I know if they are able to understand and deliver what I want?’ - this question might appear in your mind during the “Best of the Best” Interior Design Carnival 2018.
Some of you might be experiencing your first time dealing with an interior designer and that can be pretty intimidating, right? Selecting an interior designer is the most crucial part of your renovation. If your designer is epic, then most of the time, your project is going to run smoothly. However, if you stumble upon the wrong designer, you can end up with an interior designer that can’t execute the great design which you have in your mind and you risk spending more than necessary!
So this is the last post in the series relating to our Interior Design Carnival happening this weekend (5th & 6th May) and it’s important that you read this before you talk to a designer. (Psst: Check out reasons you should visit the carnival too!)
This is why the process of vetting out an interior designer is extremely important. You have to make sure that you ask the right questions in order to know what the designer is actually capable of. If not, it may lead you and the designer having mismatched expectations.
So here are 5 questions that you must ask while vetting your ideal interior designer for your home design:
1. What is the preferred style of my interior designer?
The very first question that you should ask your designer is, ‘What’s your preferred style?’ Every designer has their own unique selling point and style – and this is something that sets them apart from all the other designers. So, you have to consider their aesthetic and think if their design matches your expectation for your house. Great if the answer is yes. However, if the answer is no, then it is time for you to move on to the next designer.
2. What budget can I set aside for my renovation?
Aside from the regular consultation fee, there is always the overall cost of the project to consider. Some designers can artfully manage some severe budget constraints but some cannot.
You have to ask your designer about the estimated budget before you hand over your project to them. You must be very careful about this aspect, or you can end up busting your ideal budget for no reason at all.
3. What is the timeline for my renovation?
Another important aspect to consider is the timeline. Please always take note of this even if your interior designer provides you an attractive timeline. You will still need to follow up with them to ensure everything is on the right track and in the progress.
Frankly, you have to be extra cautious with the timeline as it can make or break a deal. For instance, if you are going to have a major renovation for your new BTO or condo, it takes around 6-8 weeks. You can estimate your renovation timeline around 8-10 weeks if you decide to remodel your resale flat. In case you want to revamp and update kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or living room, etc. this minor renovation generally takes around 2-3 weeks.
4. Are you a full-service designer?
This is another extremely important question to ask your potential interior designer whether he provides full-service. A full-service interior designer is basically a one-stop full solution for renovation where you can ask for consultation, branding, drawings and professional accompaniment. If they are not a full-service designer; however, you will have to go through a lot of hassle to get all the other work done.
5. Do you have testimonials or portfolios I can view?
Testimonials are very important to look over while vetting out your ideal interior designer. From the reviews which are written by the previous homeowners who hired the designers – you can tell the ability, the interior design style, etc. of the interior designer that you are going to select.
Of course, you may want to ask your potential designer whether they have a collection of their previous designs while meeting them. Nevertheless, due to the advent of advanced technology, you actually can obtain countless information i.e. reviews, renovation projects, videos, etc. from numerous resource via internet such as their official website, Facebook or Google Business listings.
Basically, these are the 5 questions which you have to ask the interior designers. If you have any extra questions, don’t hesitate to ask for more information. It is important to be clear about everything before deciding to hire an interior designer to do your home renovation. Good luck with your interior designer hunting!
