Cast Your Gaze Upwards At These Seven Sensational Ceilings
Ceilings are one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated parts of a home. And with good reason: most of them are boring, typically white and flat, and uniform in appearance. They’re not meant to be admired. Well, most of them…. There are, however, some obvious exceptions—such as the Sistine Chapel.
While the ceilings in this post aren’t quite as magnificent, they do offer some wonderful artistry. Let’s face it: ceilings are hard to decorate since they’re so out of reach, and therefore don’t provide the same variety of colours, shapes and textures as other parts of a home.
However, we’ve compiled some of the most remarkable and sensational ones for your viewing pleasure. So enjoy.
1) Wood You Look Up?
It’s not often we see wood on the ceiling. This first example changes our old perceptions: instead of a hardwood floor, we have a hardwood ceiling. Not only is this an interesting twist on tradition, but along with the incredible symmetry, precise balance, and hypnotic floor patterns, we have a kitchen unlike any other, a masterpiece of design and innovation.
2) Marvelously Modern
Bright colours, sharp angles, and overhead lighting, this ceiling is brazenly modern. It uses strange geometry and unusual contours to play on our senses, confusing us as we attempt to follow the asymmetrical lines of its surface.
3) Prominent Planks
It’s rather extraordinary to see rafters in an apartment, but this one manages to pull it off splendidly.
Note how the edges of each plank are illuminated by concealed lights, allowing them to stand out prominently and thus drawing our eye. Additionally, the use of white brick and exquisite satin curtains creates a strange yet attractive mix of materials.
4) Going The Distance
While the rafters in our previous example were quite remarkable, these ones are simply beautiful. Unlike the ones before, these are thin, flat and glossy, with lights built right into their surface rather than being tucked away out of sight.
What’s more, their sleek brown colouring conforms to the sophisticated look and tone of this interior, while the use of well-placed mirrors makes them appear more numerous. Last but not least, when we stare straight down these rafters they amplify our sense of distance, producing the sensation of far-off horizons.
5) Crazy Contours
Aside from the vivid blue scooter which quickly grabs our attention, what makes this room so fun and delightful is its ceiling. The use of wild, zigzagging shapes with built-in lights produces a visual feast, while the clever application of gray helps the ceiling blend seamlessly into the back wall.
At first glance, the fantastic contours on the ceiling may appear like hollow depressions, but they are in fact protrusions: this amazing trick is achieved by the use of darker shades of gray along the edges, making the zigzags look as if they’re carved into the surface.
6) Rich & Resplendent
What more could we expect from a Victorian interior than such extravagance and overstatement? Here, this lovely chandelier hangs from a ceiling that’s just as ornate. While its surface doesn’t vary in colour, the use of elaborate engravings, elegant carvings, and intricate details makes this ceiling truly Victorian.
7) Visionary Elements
Overhead lighting, a gorgeous chandelier, dark, seductive tones, and a reflective marble surface—everything about this ceiling radiates status and wealth. For a room simply overflowing with decadent decor, this ceiling still manages to attract our notice, not only by harmonizing well with its environment, but through its unique mix of colours, tones, materials and lighting.
Who knew ceilings could be so interesting? Well, after perusing these seven examples it’s time to rethink this oft-neglected part of our home.
As we’ve clearly demonstrated, when done right, ceilings are in fact worthy of attention and admiration.
