Electrify Your Home With These Playful Patterns

Electrify Your Home With These Playful Patterns

One of the greatest attributes of patterns is their versatility.  They can be used in any room and almost any object, from bedroom walls and bathrooms to carpets, pillows and works of art.

Unlimited by colour, shape, texture or material, patterns have the potential to enhance a room through bold designs or by subtle impressions.  And because they repeat over and over, they are often quick to grab our attention and hold it.

What follows are some of the most beautiful, ambitious and powerful patterns compiled for your viewing pleasure.  So read on, and be inspired.

These whirling, snake-like formations combine dark and light shades to create contrast and better stand out.

Not only do their brown colours blend perfectly into this room, adding to its already warm and rich tones, but the lighter space between the patterns gives it another visual dimension, further increasing its  allure.

2) Dynamic Diagonals

This room utilizes right angle patterns to draw our eyes.  Unlike the previous example, however, these patterns aren't simply painted on.  Rather, they're part of the actual wall, ridges and incisions which lend a 3-dimensional appearance to their surfaces.  What makes them work is their understated nature: none of the angles use colour to differentiate themselves, but match the clean look and wooden materials of their surroundings.

3) Intricate Details

In a bathroom which uses simple shapes and only a handful of colours it's hardly surprising that the tiles stand out.  Their intricate, finely detailed patterns and colours are quite mesmerizing and contrast vividly against the plainer elements of the room.

This opposition between simplicity and complexity is what makes the patterns work so well.

4) Fancy Florals

This interior is abounding with patterns, from the geometric shapes on the rug to the intricate designs on the large gray cabinet to our right.

However, what steals the spotlight are the patterns on the left wall: there's an interesting clash between the round floral shapes (when looked at up close and individually) versus the straight crisscrossing sections (when look at from afar as a whole).  The result is hypnotic, a visual display that needs to be appreciated both from near and at a distance.

5) Tricky Triangles

Speaking of hypnotic, this interior uses triangles of different shades to win our admiration.  While the shapes repeat, they are not consistent or symmetrical, emphasizing unpredictability over repetition.

6) Marvelous Monochromes

This bedroom employs two simple colours for maximum impact, and it achieves it through patterning.  First, the beautiful artwork mounted on the wall uses sharp black lines set into a white frame to immediately grab our attention.  Then there's the subtler patterns which repeat on each pillow, the first two which use simple black rectangles, followed by a second set with dark contours near the edges, and the final set which uses thin gray lines.

The consequence of all this symmetry?  A bedroom that utilizes monochromes and basic patterns to create a balanced and sophisticated look.

7) Depth and Dimension

Here we see the true artistic potential of patterns.  This bathroom uses repeating cubes where each of the three sides is represented by a different shade of gray.  The end result is an optical masterpiece of depth, dimension and distance, a recurring pattern which causes our eyes to never focus and always keep moving over the cubes.

These seven cases demonstrate the visual power of patterns.  They're versatile enough to fit any room or object and can either complement, enhance, or define the entire look of a home.

So whether you want something bold and vibrant, subtle or understated, there's a pattern that's just perfect for your home.
