5 Tips To Design a Living Room With Perfect Colour Contrast
Colour contrast is an important part of interior design. Imagine living in a space that only consists of matchy-matchy hues. Sounds boring, right? Well, that’s because it actually is. However, the art of perfect contrast is a challenge that needs a keen eye and a creative mind. Here are 5 tips to design a living room with perfect colour contrast:
1. Choosing the colours

Choosing the colours that will emulate contrast in the space is the most challenging part. First of all, the two colours need to be totally opposite in essence. For this, you can take a look at the colour wheel and pick any two shades that lie opposite to each other. Alternately, you can use your instincts and pick out hues that are starkly different. The blue and dark grey of this living room is the perfect combo.
2. Characteristics of colours

Now, one of the colour that you’ve chosen is supposed to be the primary contrast colour. It has to be imposing and charismatic. Only if it makes a bold statement can you contrast it with the other colour. The charcoal hued media wall featured in this image is an excellent example of how the primary contrast colour has to be chosen.
3. Characteristics of colours

The secondary contrast colour has to be lighter than the primary one. It should be able to stand its own against the imposing primary colour. If you look at this image, you’ll see how the blue and white triptych art provides a stark contrast against the charcoal media wall. Both colours balance each other out, and ultimately, that’s exactly what contrast is all about.
4. The in-between

So, you must be wondering how to design the space that lies between these two contrasting colours. It’s quite easy, actually. You simply design it in shades, textures, and tints that lie somewhere in-between these two primary and secondary contrast colours. The marble-topped coffee table, grey sofa, and brass accents in this living room are the perfect example.
5. Accenting

Aside from the two main contrast colours, there’s a third ‘accent’ option as well for those who like to emulate further contrast in their spaces. It consists of small decorative elements, couch cushions, vases, etc. and is used to make the living room feel fuller and more wholesome.
