7 Key Elements Of Stunning Interior Design

Interior design is both an art and a science, in its role of enhancing an interior to be beautiful, functional, safe, and pleasing for anyone using that space. While interior designers are usually driven by their ingrained creativity and flair, there is a set of principles or fundamental elements that help them create flawless interiors. They are called Seven Elements of Interior Design.

A good balance of these elements helps make any interior space functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. In this article, we look at each of these elements with stunning examples of interior design projects done by our expert designers that exemplify the perfect use of each element.

1. Space

Space is an interior design element is more than simply the dimensions of a room. You have to enhance the physical boundaries of the room to take the best advantage of what is available to you. There are three dimensions of space—length, width, and height—that you can use in your design. The space that contains furniture and other design and decorative elements is called the positive space, and the area you keep empty is called the negative space. A good interior design has a pleasant balance of both positive and negative space while keeping it highly functional without being too crowded or too sparse.

2. Lines

You have probably heard of the design term “clean lines” often used to describe modern and minimalist interiors. Different kinds of lines used in interior design are what guide your eye or give you a sense of direction when you enter a room. Lines can be created using the structural design of the room, and also the furnishing you use. There are three main types of lines—horizontal, vertical, and dynamic that together creates harmony, stability, unity, and contrast. Horizontal lines can make a room appear wider than it is. Vertical lines that are often created using windows and doorways can lengthen a room and dynamic lines such as a spiral staircase add personality, energy, and movement.

3. Form

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: The Interior Lab

Simply put, form refers to the physical shape of a room. As a designer, you will mostly encounter geometrically shaped rooms with square edges and hard lines. They can be manipulated with furnishing that has curves and abstract shapes. There are also interiors with a more organic form with softer lines that appear to be created by nature. You have to understand the core form of a room and ensure that it is consistent throughout the room, balanced out with a few contrasting objects to strike a pleasing balance.

4. Light

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: Hoft

There are two kinds of lights that you can utilize within a room—natural light and man-made light. Light creates and enhances the mood of a space. Having sufficient life is also imperative to increase the functionality of any room. Depending on the purpose it is used, lighting can be divided into several categories. There is task lighting which is added to help specific tasks such as cooking or studying. There is accent lighting which gives an aesthetic appeal by emphasizing certain objects and there is mood lighting which creates a certain ambiance. Natural lighting can also be utilized through proper sizing and placement of windows and doors.

5. Colour

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: The Interior Lab

colour has an inherent power to directly influence your mood. It is a science all on its own. Therefore, the element of colour is extremely important when it comes to interior design for it can easily make or break any design. Before you decide on a colour palette, it is important to understand the right feeling and mood you should infuse in that space. Warm colours such as red and yellow often evoke energy and warmth, while cool colours such as blue and green tend to soothe and relax you. A pleasant balance of both warm and cool colours blended with monochromatic touches creates a stunning interior.

6. Texture

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: The Interior Lab

The element of texture can be interpreted in a literal sense, such as the look and feel of a surface, and also in a more visual sense, such as a vintage wooden ornament on a marble surface. Texture adds depth to a surface and creates interest. Similar to the different shades of colours in a colour palette that complements each other, a skilled interior designer can mix and blend textures to create depth and add a sense of liveliness to a room. Texture can be added with the use of furniture, fabric, and many other decorative and functional elements in a room.

7. Pattern

Similar to texture, patterns add excitement and break the monotony of a design. You can incorporate this element in wallpaper, curtains, rugs, and more soft furnishings used to make a space feel cozy and comfortable. Contemporary and modern interiors use abstract and geometric patterns to create cleaner lines, while more traditional design themes tend to go for floral, wooden, and similar nature-inspired patterns. When it comes to patterns, however, you need to be careful not to overdo them, since too many patterns can overwhelm or add a cluttered feel to a room.
