Here’s How To Design a Spacious Ground Floor

Having a multistory home in Singapore is a dream-come-true. In the land of short real-estate, even two floors can feel palatial. But this just means that you have to pay extra attention to utilizing a space to the best of your ability. Many homeowners find it difficult to design a spacious ground floor, so here are a few tips you should keep in mind:

1. Open floor layout

The key ingredient in any spacious floor plan is how much openness you can emulate in it. There’s obviously a limit on how much square-footage you can spare while maintaining the structural integrity of your space. In cases where it feels difficult to tie-in a full scale open floor layout, you can opt for columns and beams for support.

2. Use furniture boundaries

Now that you’ve got an open floor layout, you can make the most of it with the help of furniture. This means that you should use furniture to create boundaries within the space instead of actual walls. The couch can be the barrier between the living room and the rest of the space, and etc.

3. Light and materials

Good lighting and material matter the most while designing a spacious floor plan. Try to incorporate as much natural light in your layout as you can. Artificial lighting can couple well with natural light to make your ground floor feel positively spacious. You can also go for white-oriented color and material schemes to enhance the reflective aura of your home.

4. Transparency

A great way to make the ground floor of your home feel as spacious as possible is by emulating transparency – especially from the upper floor. It can be done in many ways. You can opt for glass staircase railings, double-height spaces, mezzanine floors, skylights, etc. Sometimes, bringing in transparency can require extensive structural works, so be prepared for that.

5. Let the outdoors in

The best part about designing a ground floor is that you have a lot of leeway with how you can let in the views from outside. You can use lots of glass to break the barrier between the views of the interior and exterior – it will definitely make the plan feel spacious.
