How To Handle the Heat: Interior Design Tips For Hot Climates

It does not matter how attractively we decorate a home if it is constantly hot, humid, and uncomfortable inside. While air conditioners are an easy solution for homes in warm climates or places with intense summers, it can be quite expensive and difficult to evenly improve the temperature of the entire home with an air conditioning system. Moreover, the high energy consumption of air conditioners can be quite high and harmful to nature. Therefore, when designing and decorating interiors in warm climates, there are many natural and passive cooling methods to reduce the temperature and spend less on air conditioning. These tips will help you handle the heat and keep your home interior pleasantly cool and comfortable all throughout the year.

1. Natural Ventilation and Free Airflow

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: Ciseern by Designer Furnishings The most important design choice you can make when trying to lower the heat within a home is to make sure it can “breathe”. It means having windows and other openings which allows easy airflow within the house, without letting the heat to be trapped inside. Even if you do not live in a warm climate, having stagnant air in a room can make it feel stuffy and uncomfortable. Have an open plan that maximizes the airflow in the house, and do not place large pieces of furniture that can block the free airflow. You can even go for a more extreme measure and remove a wall or two to create an open space plan, especially for your living, dining, and kitchen areas.

2. Cooling Surface Materials

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: Free Space Intent Once you have good airflow in your home, you should make sure that the surfaces that the air touch are cooling and ideally dehumidifying. This is particularly important when it comes to the flooring and the ceiling of your home, which take up most of the surface space. Some of the good flooring materials to use in warm climates are natural stone, marble, clement, and porcelain. Try to avoid wood flooring since it may feel cooling at first, wood can retain heat for a long. For soft furnishings such as curtains and rugs, stick with natural fabrics such as linen and cotton.

3. Light and Bright colours

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: Azcendant Light reflects light and heat, and dark absorbs it. While dark and deep-coloured interiors are quite trendy these days, dark walls can soak up all the heat during the day and make your home feel like a sauna at night. White is always a good choice. If you like a little more colour, you can go for pale pinks, blues, and beiges. Light colours also make your home appear more spacious and remove the claustrophobic feeling that you may get when being inside a home with high interior temperature. If you like having dark-coloured furniture, place them in an area with shadows or away from the path of direct natural light during the day.

4. Calming Window Covers

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: Exqsite Interior Having large enough windows to naturally enhance the ventilation in a home, and using curtains to block the natural light can seem counterproductive. It can be quite tricky to balance the two since overdoing or underdoing either can lead to a heated-up interior. The best way to approach this is by opening the windows during the cooler times of the day and using a breezy and natural fabric such as linen to cover the windows in the afternoons when the sun is blazing the most. There are also UV-deflecting glasses with special features that you can use in windows for a great return on investment later on.

5. Lots and Lots of Plants!

Interior Design, Home Renovation Image Source: AP8Werks There is no better natural tool to decrease heat and increase the air quality of your home than indoor plants. Not only they absorb the heat, but they also release pure oxygen into your homes. There are also special plants such as bamboo and aloe vera that helps with the unpleasant humidity in warm climates. Having the verdant vision of plants around you also has a psychological effect of making you feel cool and refreshed since our brains are conditioned to feel that way when in nature. This has the added bonus effect of reducing your stress and improving your mood.
