Every year the colour experts at Pantone explore the world for new colour influences and come up with a defining colour for the forthcoming year. They consider everything from world events, the entertainment industry, popular travel destinations, and on-going socio-economic conditions in the entire world for this. They also consider the technologies, trends, materials, textures, and colours that are popular in both real lives and in vast social media to decide The Pantone colour/s of the Year. They announce this every December, influencing much of the products across design, fashion, and furnishing for the coming year.

The Pantone colour/s of the Year 2021: PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating Yellow

This includes a warm and optimistic yellow and a calm and strong soft gray. These two independent colours come together to create a beautiful harmony of hope, serenity, and optimism that the year 2021 is all about. In this article, let us inspire you with a few ideas and concepts for your interior design projects this year, using Pantone’s colours of the year.

A Bold To Colour To Make a Statement

The colour Illuminating Yellow catches the eye quickly, giving bright and joyful vibes. This makes it a great colour to make a striking statement, especially in an interior with pale warm colours such as brown, beige, rust, and corals. Yellow makes us instantly think of sunshine and happiness, which makes it a great colour for entryways. You can use the yellow colour in your decorative plush pillows, cushions, and curtains, with the colour gray background.

Strike Balance

Balancing colours is an important interior design skill. When a room is filled with colours without a sense of balance and order, it can overwhelm the eye and mind, making it feel uncomfortable to be there. Yellow and gray are two colours that easily flatter each other, making it easy to colour balance a room when you use those two colours. Yellow brings the vivacity and energy to a room, while gray helps it balance by its peaceful hue and solid and dependable nature. You can further blend and balance them by having different shades of each other, and a lighter neutral such as beige or white.

Make a Stunning Contrast

Colour contrast is an extremely important factor in interior design since it helps establish a pleasant hierarchy and depth. The strategic use of contrast with complementary colours adds beautiful visual interest. Yellow and grey are contrasting in an extremely flattering way, bringing the perfect balance between sophisticated and fun. When you include colour contrast in your interiors, always take both the natural and artificial lighting in the room into consideration. Since yellow is a warm colour and grey is cool and neutral, you can use both colours equally to balance each other out. Go for geometric shapes to add even more defining contrast along with the colours.

Play with Patterns

Patterns bring interest, texture, and energy to a room. They also help you make pleasant illusions of depth and space of a room, especially when you use contrasting colours such as yellow and coupled with black, white, and different shades of each colour. Geometric patterns with different colours make great statement walls that can dramatically enhance the look of any room. Pantone’s reason behind choosing Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray was to evoke feelings of strength, hope, and optimism that this colour combination brings. Therefore, using these colours this year to make your living space more vibrant and beautiful is only fitting.

An Element of Surprise

Our brains crave for a sense of order and aesthetic patterns, but it also jumps with joy when there is a pleasant element of surprise somewhere. For those who have minimalist and contemporary homes with subtle monochromatic colour themes, Pantone colours of the Year, especially Illuminating Yellow is a great way to add that popping element of surprise. You can create this by an unexpected form, artwork, contrasting soft furnishings, and even bright yellow incandescent light fixtures as seen above. It is all about making them sit beautifully with the rest of the theme while standing out for a pleasantly surprising moment whenever you look at it.
