Your Guide To Creating Focal Points In An Interior Design
A good focal point is a statement piece that anchors the viewers’ eye to one place in an interior design. It also complements the rest of the space while maintaining a unique presence. Below, we’ve created an extensive guide on creating beautiful focal points in your interior designs. Let’s take a look:
1. Handling the living room

Creating a focal point in the living room is one of the most challenging tasks you’ll encounter. Just know that there are two or maximum three focal areas in the living room depending on the user’s experience and perception of the space. The accent chair makes one of them. A statement art behind the sofa can be another one. And the media wall – which is largely visible to the person watching TV from the sofa – is always the biggest one.
2. In transitional spaces

It’s important to create decorative focal points in transitional spaces, or they end up feeling too bland and unmemorable. You can do so by using console tables, small sideboard buffets, and even by placing a pair of accent chairs. If you don’t want to use furniture, then going for an in-built niche or a shelf is also a good option. If you want to be purely decorative, then think: gallery walls, oversized vases, etc.
3. What to do with empty space?

Those empty nooks and alcoves that are a result of a bit if left-over spaces are the perfect opportunity to create a great focal point in a room. Furniture is inadvertently the best way to do so. You can create a small reading nook with an accent chair, a tall floor lamp, and an end table to capture the eye. But if you’re working with a ‘flat’ space, then placing a statement loveseat with an end table along the wall is also a good option.
4. Think in lights

A cluster of pendent lights is an excellent way to create a beautiful focal point, but with multiple fixtures. You just have to make sure that the lights take center-stage in this layout format. But if your background feels to empty, you can add artwork frames to balance it out. Alternately, you can also choose a one single statement chandelier for a similar effect.
5. Colour focused

Lastly, if nothing else is working out, then go for a single brightly colored accessory to create an awesome, eye-catching focal point. It can be in the form of accent furniture, a planter, an oversized canvas on the wall, and much more. Just remember: make sure this focal point is a contrasting color that complements the rest of your theme.
