New Age Kitsch

New Age Kitsch

Wikipedia refers to Kitsch as a ‘low-brow style of mass produces art or design using popular cultural icons.’ It is an accurate description, like most foreign translations, the essential meaning of this German word is lost somewhere between the translations. Although the kitsch style is very understated and casual style, it does not have a very elegant or sophisticated look. Individually, it is a style that may be used for those with a bit of an acquired taste. This design is considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but is appreciated in an ironic way. However, in interior design the idiosyncrasies of the kitsch style can be amalgamated with a more a la mode design to create something that is unique, particular and also atypically stylish. There is a certain amount of shabby chic involved in the overall outlook of a new age kitsch-y design that amounts an ambiance ripe with good old nostalgia, and that is one of the selling points of this design style. In fact, nostalgia is one of the key elements of this kind of design, and today we will be looking at a list of interiors that have embraces this style and its accompanying nostalgia to its fullest.

1. Furniture

Ye old wooden furniture a la retro used be a slice of life Americana and Middle Eastern dream back in the late twentieth century – not so much now. But this particular interior takes this kitsch style and amalgamates the ambient material palate with the furniture, lending a bit of designed credibility and an elegance to the overall space manipulation.

2. Vertical

Oakwood is one of those materials that, if used in a particular style of design, seem age old and retro at the same time. In the case of this design, the round table along with the nonagenarian chairs come together to create a semi kitsch and semi contemporary formation in the best of ways.

3. Ambiance

Although every object and fixture in this interior scape is distinctly contemporary, there is still a very kitsch-y air about it, and that is largely in part due to the expertly applied material palate and lighting. The dewy gold lighting on this specific shade of wood creates an ambiance that is cluttered but not at the same time.
