Staircase Design – Spiraling Up in Style
One of the most underrated aspects of interior design – mostly because apartment living is the new ‘it’, and there is not much room for stairs when it comes to designing a predetermined square footage. Even in suburbia where homes span at least two stories, staircase design in interiors is woefully neglected. Only in places of commercial activity do we get to see a staircase that has been primped to perfection. But just because small scale home interior designing has been neglectful with designing staircases and its relevant accessories does not mean that there are not some pretty great examples of well-designed staircases in our repertoire.
When it comes to choosing the best option for your staircase design, space and its constraints seem to be the biggest consideration – whether you have room enough to go spiral, what would be the height of your tread, would you prefer comfort over fashion or vice versa – these are all very important questions. Only when you’ve determined the best possible course of action in light of these considerations can you get on with designing the perfect staircase. Today, we would be looking at a few notable examples of small scale, beautifully designed staircases for your consideration.
Let us start with something conventional. Everyone has seen this particular railing design – or something very similar of the sort, at least once in their lifetime. Well, that is what makes it a timeless classic. No matter how much the proportions get changed, and no matter how many variations come in the design of a single module, the overall outlook of this particular design would forever be evergreen.
A spiral staircase works best in an area that is high on space constraints – the picture below demonstrates a perfect design for such constraints while keeping it all a la mode. The black and white finish, along with the transparent design make this design a must-have!
3. Modern Minimalism
The sheer glass railing is not only transparent but also alluringly voguish, and the rest of the staircase follows the simplicity of the initial design. However, the beautiful integration of lighting and texture into the mix make this particular stairwell a dream to be in – an exquisite design.
This staircase embraces the organic, rich natural textures of wood and laminate in the midst of a more contemporary setting, but the design detailing is effectively modern enough to counter the organic nature of the material application. Overall, it is an effectively subdued design.
5. Black and White
This spiral staircase is medium sized and designed to be more stylistic than functional – as is the case with most small scale spiral staircases. However, the design is alluring enough to merge with the overall scheme of the interior.
